SHUI & THE CITY {OF ANGELS}

I was on safari in South Africa when I had a dream that simply stated:

Stop drinking wine; you are pregnant.

And indeed I was. Eight weeks pregnant. My career in fashion seemed to have lost luster. One day during lunch, I had the overwhelming urge to walk home rather than back into my corporate design job. So I did. As I strolled the sixty or so blocks between Madison and Bond, I mused… Once home, I grabbed a legal pad and jotted a list that looked something like this:

  • Transfer to a midwife

  • Explore hypnobirthing

  • Baby likes open spaces

  • Baby wants to go to Marfa

  • Study landscape design?

  • Look into Waldorf Education

  • Baby wants Reiki

I heeded The Siren’s call on all accounts. My world widened. Space to Feel. I wrapped my head in silk taffeta turbans and began spending my days trekking the lengths of the city, or making Mecca to wild landscapes. Room to breathe. All adventures just my babe & me, sometimes a girlfriend in tow, for my marriage was already over… perhaps had never existed, although it would take me a few more years to acknowledge this truth.

I was so deeply entranced, so with Spirit during labor that I could not speak, not even to ask for a sip of water. My husband looked like a stranger and I would not let him near me.

I had a deep Knowing come through:

You are here to heal cycles of abuse through beauty.

With this download indelibly noted, I came back to Earth. I told my doula to turn off the lights and turn on the Jazz. I told my midwife to reach in and guide my son; his shoulder was stuck on my left pelvic bone. And I told the many young doctors who had crept into the room to leave, for alas there would be no surgical tutorial on my body.

I did not know what healing cycles of abuse through beauty meant, nor what it looked like, but I committed to walking the path, which led me (begrudgingly) to Los Angeles, where I began renovating a 1920’s Spanish home. If pregnancy had unlocked the door of my spiritual side, LA kicked down the damn door. My teachers began to appear. Including my second son. During his home birth, he gave me the mantra of ‘Surrender.’ As he was entering this plane, another Knowing came through:

You’re not with your man.

Not quite as poetic as the previous ‘labor message,’ though I appreciate brevity and truth.

Sure enough, a few months later, my then-husband came home from work to find me nursing in bed.  He told me he was divorcing me and keeping our home.

Four years later, I have birthed my third baby, a Modern Feng Shui Modality. Like her brothers before her, she’s absolutely her own person. As her mother, it’s my role to love her and watch her grow; to foster an inherent sense of freedom, yet declare safe boundaries as she matures. Excited to see what she does in this world.
