Such is the intention that performing artist Ylva Falk (read her I/O Community interview here) plans to deliver through her new workshop. And here is how…

 

In Swedish her name means ‘Wolf Falcon’ and this chameleon - who lives her life to the fullest, never ceasing to evolve physically and spiritually - can take on the appearance of so many different creatures, namely those who have escaped from her inner dream world.

A dancer, performer, artist and movement research worker, Ylva follows her path through consistent training and studies including contemporary dance, classical ballet, hip hop, popping, break dancing, Butoh, Voguing, martial arts, Shaolin Kung Fu, Qi Gong, Thai Chi, SystemA, yoga, meditation and surfing.

In this quest, she has also mingled with healers and spiritual teachers all over the world. A journey that has presented her with experiences, techniques and a full spectrum vision of life itself.

She currently performs with the Chinese contemporary artist Tianzhuo Chen, the French performance art collective House of Drama, the outer-space performance punk live act Mega o Mega and is also a freelance dancer, dj, singer, traveler (inside and out) … always learning from the greatest teacher of all: nature itself!

Everything is possible if you know how to practice for it. That you can get better, get over, get real, go far! With training. Strengthening the mind is like strengthening a muscle.


What is your new workshop about?
I am putting together the different forms of knowledge I have experienced, as a workshop for dancers, body researchers, and everyone else. I have created general techniques and recipes to upgrade your system, unlock your body through intuitive and guided movement and sound. All of this combines to provide access to a state of well-being, release, and the ability to live a life that is more full and more free. It is a mix of many techniques I’ve learned throughout my life as a dancer, performer and martial artist. In addition to dance, movement and sound, expect metaphorical exercises to heal from the inside to the outside of both body and mind. Through training and a guided meditative state we learn to let go of what we don’t need anymore.

What do you expect to bring to the people who will attend?
I think the experience can be tested as a form of therapy, to get rid of the past and deepen your movement and expression on stage, access a better relationship with yourself and others or even improve your sex life. The idea is to find the life source and get your inner energy flow, your qi, out and about!

What were the most important learnings you experienced?
Everything in life, and most importantly all the struggles and fears I have experienced and survived so far. Because I have been through this and healed I know for a fact that it is possible! And I want people to know it. Everything is possible if you know how to practice for it. That you can get better, get over, get real, go far! With training. Strengthening the mind is like strengthening a muscle. Training, repetition and practice are some of the keys to unlocking the gates to freedom.

What do you wish to pass on?
Freedom.

First forget and let go of what you think you know. Go back and choose when to be a body, when to be a mind and when to be both at the same time.

Why did you create this workshop?
Because I feel it is needed. It has become trendy to exercise and practice movement, health and therapy. In these times when people want everything at once - fast results - a lot of knowledge gets lost in the teaching and ironically the things that get lost are the those things that could lead to real changes, benefits and evolutions. I would like to bring it back, shine a light on the lost knowledge. Through my research and meetings, through many different styles and teachers, I found so many answers and was able to be released from own struggles. These are elements that I feel ready to share in order to hopefully help others. In the same way that I have been rescued!

How do you connect mind and body?
Through conscious training. For example by taking many steps back to first forget and let go of what you think you know. Go back and choose when to be a body, when to be a mind and when to be both at the same time.
