ANASTASIA - NEW YORK
Anastasia Klaffert grew up between South Africa and Louisiana but found herself living in Brooklyn with her husband, after a stint in London, Berlin and L.A.
She is a part time model, creative director of social media and events at HigherDOSE, and a student of Eastern Medicine and Thai bodywork. She's also the founder of FALK, an organization with a mission to raise money for grassroots initiatives through events and retreats, promoting wellness of the body, mind and earth to heal and help communities that have endured unethical treatment. We met with her at Woom Center for a ocean-front yoga class.
Inside/Out: What’s the first sport you ever practiced?
Anastasia: Athletics, although I played every sport.
I/O: And the first one that made you feel confident?
I/O: Was physical education a central element of your identity at school when you were a kid?
A: Physical education no but sports and being social, yes. Growing up I was constantly playing sports or just exploring outside.
I/O: Are you a sports fan?
A: Not really, I enjoy watching sports sometimes but I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch a game.
I/O: What sports heroes do you remember from childhood?
A: Francois Pienaar (South African Rugby Captain).
I/O: Do you ever feel intense emotions during your workouts?
A: Definitely, I've cried many times after a yoga class, I've felt euphoric from a good run and during The Class by TT I've felt every emotion possible. God The Class is good.
I/O: Favorite sports moments of the last 20 years?
A: Getting a gold medal at school for High Jump and a silver for Hurdles in one day.
I/O: Do you have a mantra?
A: I have a few. I like to say thank you for what I am grateful for. I say this to myself or out loud to no one in particular. I love to experience new things so I often go into something with a big smile on my face saying "fuck it, why not."
I/O: How would you define the relationship that New Yorkers have with the active lifestyle?
A: Most New Yorkers are active without trying, everyone walks everywhere in the city. And with a workout studio on what feels like every block, it is hard to avoid working out, at least a little. It's not easy to thrive in NY if your not taking time to balance your body and mind through exercise or conscious activity.
I/O: What is your ideal performance garment or product?
A: I love massage balls, also known as Lacross balls, I always have one when I am traveling. They are so good for self massage.
I/O: What lifestyle rituals or routines do you do before or after working out?
A: It really depends on what sort of workout I do. I almost always wake up make some sort of tonic or bullet proof coffee and do a few minutes of movement. Most of the time, I just have my workout clothes in my bag and, depending on time, I will either find myself in some sort of class, infrared sauna or the gym.
I/O: What about beauty?
A: I'm pretty relaxed with myself styling and will always just have my hair in a pony tail or top bun for work outs. I always have a little bottle of rose spray and small rollers of an essential oil blend I made.
I/O: From street to studio, define your style.
A: Boho chic - I enjoy being comfortable but still looking feminine. I love a beautiful flowing dress as much as a good button down shirt and jeans.
I/O: What wellness trends do see happening?
A: Infrared sauna therapy, breathe work, plant medicine healing, are definitely growing more momentum right now. I cannot say I am against anything, what I would like to see change is the amount of people who talk about being in the "now" and meditating all the time, actually practice it. What I would love to try next is salsa dancing! I love to dance, more of an eyes closed big smile dancing but I recently went to a Columbia party and was in awe of the way the women moved. I want to move like that!
I/O: In the city that never sleeps where does mind/body training fit into your life?
A: Mind training is a constant part of my life, as you can imagine if you read my intro, my schedule is packed right now and I have to consciously make time to workout otherwise my body lets me know it!
I/O: Have you ever traveled for wellness?
A: Yes, I travel almost every year for some sort of retreat.
I/O: If so, is it something you do on your own or with a friend, some friends?
A: I always go by myself.
I/O: If you travel alone, are you likely to connect with some sort of community?
A: It depends on what type of retreat it is, if it’s a community based retreat then definitely I connect with everyone around me. I am a Taurus sun and ascending Aries so im very sociable!
I/O: Do you feel that you are part of a sports or wellness community?
A: I am very much part of a wellness community, working at HigherDOSE makes it hard not to be. Because I am their social media manager, digital is a big part of my life but I am blessed to have a wonderful community of strong talented and conscious women around me constantly.
I/O: What destinations are on your wish list?
A: Where to begin! Peru has been pulling on my heart greatly so I'm sure I will find myself there soon. I definitely want to travel more around South East Asia. I love being surrounded by different cultures.
I/O: What role does music play in your practice(s)?
A: Music speaks to my soul, I feel its every beat. I cannot play any instruments though not the strongest at remembering words. But it can make me feel everything.
I/O: Is working out and selfcare the new social/nightlife?
A: I would say so yes. Just using HigherDOSE as an example - their slogan is "Get High Naturally" and they want to make you feel like when you come into their space that you could be coming into a very trendy but very welcoming night club! Self care is cool!
I/O: How did sports of physical activities impact your eating habits?
A: Modeling definitely made me conscious of what I was putting into my body, but I didn’t get truly healthy until around 25 which is when I realized that not everybody was the same and not every diet worked the same. From there, I experimented with all sorts of diets and now I am really connected to my body and am conscious of what feels good and what doesn’t.
I/O: Does challenging yourself physically take you out of your comfort zone in other areas of your life?
A: Sometimes, yes. It's not always easy to motivate yourself to workout when your tired and its cold outside, it’s a challenge. That’s when I am extra thankful for my yoga mat at home and having access to an infrared sauna!
I/O: How do you strive to find balance between different areas of your life?
A: All I know is that if you do what you love and take the time to be conscious of your environment, and in the moment, with the people around you, then your in a pretty good place.
I/O: What does female empowerment mean to you? Do you feel that women go further together?
A: Female empowerment to me is helping to build up your sisters around you. Being proud about their achievements and supporting each other to be the best that we wish to be. I am stronger and wiser because of the community of women around me.
