FAN CLUB BY MARINE PARMENTIER OF MIRZ YOGA
Since she was a child, Marine Parmentier has been fascinated by practices related to well-being and mysticism. In 2009 she discovered yoga and found the practice so beneficial inside and out that she decided shortly after to become a teacher. She started with Hatha in Goa and Mysore, then studied the Katonah method in Los Angeles, adding to that an Iyengar training to round out her knowledge, in Paris.
In 2015, Marine founded her own studio near the Buttes Chaumont, in north east Paris. MIRZ YOGA (named after a nickname given to her by her mother) contributes to the local wellness scene through efforts to transmit the philosophy of yoga in a simple, contemporary and digestible way.
Today, this creative teacher and entrepreneur shares some of her favorite places, essentials and rituals.
SKY TING (NEW YORK) & LOVE YOGA (LOS ANGELES) STUDIOS
When I travel to the US, I like to practice in these 2 studios. In both spots, I feel like I do at Mirz's - at home! The yoga styles are fluid and accessible, ranging from soft to more dynamic, both inspired by Taoist theory, sacred geometry and Katonah yoga. I also recommend their yoga and sound bath workshops.
OTHERWILD (LOS ANGELES & NEW YORK)
These wellness darlings have shops in both New York and Los Angeles. Otherwild is a hybrid space where you can find art books, fanzines, mystical candles, ritualistic products, organic skin care, eco-friendly design and fashion. They also host fascinating guests for workshops on astrology, tarot (like Rachel Howe below), feminism and support all forms of ethical initiatives as well as local communities. Cosmic, cool, conscious.
I could wear this brand every day of the week! From lingerie to small silk tops, through their jumpsuits, swimsuits and sweat pants, their pieces are superb basics that you can keep over the years. The cuts and materials (natural and organic) are ultra-comfortable, the color palette always gets the mood of the moment . Minimalist, timeless and sporty (editor's note: discover our interview with the founders here).
My favorite activewear products come from Outdoor Voices. I like that their bras and leggings are very simple and plain, in a delicious color palette. Soft pastels with more vivid colors, I love them all! The cuts are perfect and keep their shape over time. I also love the bright and friendly shop environnements.
THE SMALL SPELLS TAROT DECK BY RACHEL HOWE
I use the tarot as an intuitive tool for personal guidance and for my loved ones and I draw the cards with this game created and designed by Rachel Howe Small Spells. Through her illustrations, her interpretation of arcana and the sacred is at once precise, simple, beautiful and magical! A multidisciplinary artist, Rachel is also a brilliant contemporary healer (tarot, reiki, astro) and tattoo artists. During my last trip to LA, she inked my thigh with her patterns using the 'stick n poke' technique. She also organizes workshops to learn how to draw cards. A few months ago, she opened her little shop at 857 N Virgil Avenue in Los Angeles.
I have been interested in trance states for a while now. They are more commonly called 'altered states of consciousness,' simply because the term might be less scary. Trance has always played a vital role in so-called primitive and ancient societies. It allowed the human being to be in direct contact with another reality or frequency, to access valuable elements of openness of consciousness, healing, help for himself and others, and even spiritual elevation. I recently attended a week-long Holotropic Breathing Seminar which is a specific technique of hyperventilation to access a state of trance. It is the most powerful, incredible, fascinating and therapeutic experience I have ever experienced. I came feeling totally released and reset.
THE COUTIVER PINK CLAY SOAP
This natural soap is organic and vegan, contains no palm oil and is handmade in Colchester, England. The pink clay absorbs and removes impurities nestled in the pores, resulting in improved texture on both face and body. It is an ideal natural remedy for purifying all skin types. And remember soap = zero plastic waste.
THE LAMAZUNA PINE SOLID SHAMPOO
Lamazuna is a brand of solid, zero waste cosmetics, made in Nice with ingredients of natural origin. I was super skeptical about using a solid shampoo for my very long, dry hair. And in fact, it's a revolution in my bathroom! This small grooved vegan and sulphate free solid shampoo gives great texture and hair stays clean longer. To top that off, it lasts as long as two bottles of liquid shampoo and doesn't take up much space in a suitcase.
BRAZILIAN MATÉ CHÀ IRACEMA
My Brazilian friend Jeanne Garaude is the creator of this brand of wild maté. Harvested by hand in the heart of the southern Brazilian rainforest, it grows exclusively in the shade, resulting in a subtle and refined product, with legendary therapeutic virtues. The maté is fair trade and certified 100% natural and organic. I do not drink coffee in the morning so this provides me with the stimulation I need while also being a natural antioxidant. Even more nutritious than green tea, it is rich in vitamins (A, C, E, B1 and B2) and minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium, potassium, and manganese). Available at Mirz!
NONIQUE SKIN CARE PRODUCTS
I am a fan of this German organic and vegan skincare brand. The products smell good, are not expensive and are extremely effective. I can't do without their avocado and olive oil line for dry skin, and in particular their moisturizing body milk and 24 hour face cream without PEG, parabens or silicone. The only downside: so far I can only find them in Germany. So every time I go back to visit my parents' in Alsace, in eastern France, I'll cross the border to do some shopping and stock up.
VEGGIE STEWS AND MATCHA COOKIES AT BOB'S KITCHEN
Bob's has been my canteen for years. They were among the first in Paris to offer vegetarian cuisine. I like that their dishes are simple and healthy without skimping on portions, something that I find to be rather rare for vegetarians. Their stew is a mix of grains, roasted vegetables and crudités. As for their matcha cookies ... no words! The place is cool, simple, and friendly: everything is there.
KYTHNOS ISLAND (CYCLADES)
I discovered the magic of this Greek island 2 years ago when I organized my first yoga retreat there. I absolutely fell in love with it! There are very few tourists, the beaches are quiet and you can walk for hours on small winding paths without meeting anyone. In picturesque Cycladic fashion, the sky is impeccably blue and contrasts with the bright white of the small traditional village homes. And there is delicious local cuisine. I have since decided to organize a second retreat there from May 25 to June 1, in 2019. Who wants to come with us?
